Why take a small group tour?

The principal reason to take small groups to Patabamba is to provide personalized service. In a small group, it’s easy to keep walking together and enjoy the nature, with the possibility to make friends and share experiences, interacting more closely with each other. In larger groups (10–16 people), they tend to split into factions with a sizeable difference between the fastest and slowest member, making it more difficult for guides to provide effective explanations. Small groups require less space and enable the guide to select better locations, with a more intimate relationship between guide, cook, porters, and tourists, better meeting individual needs and attending to environmental issues.

Benefits of a private tour

One of the main reasons why the private option is sought after is because you do not need to worry about which dates we have departures set for or if our departures have enough space. In addition to the convenience and flexibility in booking, the private option provides a more personal trip experience for your group. We will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. The guide will focus all of his energy and attention on your group. You can also be more specific about the foods that you would like to be served. It is a truly wonderful experience to go on such an amazing journey with only your friends and loved ones. Ask at South Adventure Peru Tours how you can arrange your own private tour.

Day 1: Patabamba Community Experience – Full Day Tour

Departure Time: 8:30 AM | Duration: 9 hours | Recommended for: Families, Adults, Young people | Minimum: 2 passengers | Languages: English, Spanish, Quechua | Season: April – October (possible year-round)

After a delicious breakfast at your hotel in Cusco, our professional guide will pick you up in a private vehicle and begin a scenic drive through the Andean countryside. Along the way, you will see traditional crops growing in the fields, such as potatoes, Andean corn, and ancient grains like quinoa and kiwicha.

Upon arrival in the rural community of Patabamba, you will receive a warm and friendly Andean welcome. This community is well known for its commitment to preserving the ancestral iconography and techniques of traditional Andean textiles.

Your cultural experience begins with two immersive workshops that offer deep insight into the daily life and customs of the local people:

Textile Workshop: Patabamba women will introduce you to the art of Andean weaving. Learn the complete process of textile production, including wool shearing, spinning, washing, natural dyeing, and weaving, all guided by local experts who have inherited these techniques through generations. The weaving tradition of Patabamba almost disappeared as just a handful of elders knew how to weave. Since partnering with the CTTC in 2001, the women of Patabamba have embraced their weaving tradition and are learning from their elders the designs, techniques, and styles that were almost lost. Today approximately 40-50 adult weavers and 20 children are members of the Patabamba weaving association.

Scenic Walk & Plant Gathering: After meeting the community members, you will enjoy a short walk to a spectacular viewpoint located at the edge of an 800-meter-deep canyon, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Sacred Valley. On the return walk, you will collect native flowers and plants used for natural dyes, which will later be applied to the textiles.

Pachamanca Cooking Demonstration: Next, you will witness the preparation of a traditional Pachamanca, an ancient Andean cooking technique. Pachamanca comes from the Quechua words Pacha (earth) and Manka (pot) and refers to food cooked underground using hot stones in an earthen oven known as a huatia. The meal typically includes marinated lamb, chicken, and sometimes pork or guinea pig, along with potatoes, sweet potatoes, green fava beans, plantains, corn, humitas, and local cheeses, all seasoned with traditional Andean spices.

Artisan Market: Before departing the Patabamba community, you will have the opportunity to purchase handwoven textiles directly from the local women. Browse unique blankets, ponchos, chullos, and other pieces while learning the symbolic meanings behind the traditional Andean designs and iconography.

In the afternoon, after enjoying this delicious Andean meal and cultural experience, we will return to Cusco and drop you off at your hotel.
