This is the dry season in the Peruvian Andes, Try to hike particularly in June or July, or August, the driest months of the year. Lakes to visit during the hike

  • Comercocha Lake: This is one of the beautiful lakes where you will take picture. Its name comes from the Quechua Language and means (Comer: Green / Cocha: Lake).
  • Alqacocha Lake: This lake is considered a succession of lakes. Two of the lakes are known by the name Alqacocha, which in Quechua means (Two colors).
  • Patacocha Lake: This is one of the third lake which named is Patacocha, in Quechua means (Lake of the peak).
  • China Otorongo Lake: Its one of the most important lake for the inhabitants of the local people, its considered the duality and origin of Andean life its name refers to a female feline, as the color of its water is similar to the fur of the Otorongo.
  • Orco Otorongo Lake: Located above 4,590 m.a.s.l (15,060 ft). This lake’s name derived from a Quechua word meaning (Male Otorongo) alluding to a feline of the Peruvian Jungle.
  • Azulcocha Lake: The name of this lake comes from a Quechua word meaning (Blue lake) and its blue colors will surely captivate you.

Where are the Ausangate 7 lakes?

The Ausangate 7 lakes are located in the southeastern part of Cusco, at 74 miles / 120 km. At Quispicanchis Provice.

Why are some lakes turquoise?

The Most of these lagoons have turquoise coloration, and that is what makes them look more attractive. The melting waters wash the pulverized minerals and deposit them in the lake waters, and it never sinks at the base. This natural effect of the coloration displays better on those sunny days.

What to Bring / Carry

  • Sunscreen: the sun is very strong in Cusco
  • Sun hat / Sunglasses / Lip balm
  • Hiking shoes/boots with good, grippy tread
  • Trekking poles (you can also get the bamboo sticks at the beginning)
  • Optional: microspikes in case of excessive snowfall (rare)
  • Hiking pants and shirts (layers recommended)
  • Hand warmers if you wish / Warm hat, gloves, scarf
  • Daypack and rain cover
  • Rain gear – rain jacket and rain pants (optional for the pants, can buy an inexpensive poncho before the trek)
  • Cash for tipping the staff (ripped or damaged bills of any kind are NOT acceptable in Peru)
  • Torch/flashlight/headlamp, and batteries
  • Extra snacks if you wish
  • Personal medication and toiletries you might need
  • Camera, extra memory cards, batteries and solar panel/power bank
  • Water bottle or water bladder to refill
  • Passport (must be valid 6 months past your final travel dates for most countries)
Day 1 –

Day 01: Cusco / Pacchanta / 7 Lakes / Cusco:

At 4:00am, you will be picked up from your hotel by our English speaking guide, and our private vehicle and you will start with this lovely drive through the South Valley. The drive to the trailhead takes 3 hours and half towards Pacchanta ( 4,300 m.a.s.l ) where we will take a short breaks for our Delicious breakfast at the community. And then we will start the hike towards the 7 lakes, we will hike for about 4 hours and 40 minutes (in total – round trip) and we will visit the following lakes: The hike will be about 5 hours and will take you along the path where we will see the different lakes like Azulcocha, Otorongo , Pucacovha, Alqacocha y Q’omercocha. That’s not the only highlight; we will also view the snow covered peaks that surround this area. These include Ausangate (6834 m.), Mariposa or Butterfly (5842 m.), Jampa (5500 m.), Pucapunta ( 5740 m), Caracol or Snail mountain (5625 m.), Tinke (5300 m.) and the whole Qayangate chain of mountains.

Trekking from 7 Lakes to Pacchanta community, after visiting all the 7 lakes we will return to the small community known as Pacchanta. Lunch at Pacchanta community In the community of Pacchanta there are Hot Springs. You can enjoy the hot springs for about 40 minutes or you can explore the Pacchanta community on your own. Afternoon, we will return to Cusco and dropped off at your hotel between 6 to 630pm.
